What is Bollywood

Bollywood is the name of the Indian film industry. It is based in Mumbai, Maharastra State of India. Bollywood is an industry making movies mainly in Hindi. More than 6 Million people work in Bollywood Industry in various roles.

One of the first film productions from Mumbai was called Bombay Talkies. In 1970s India became the world's largest film producer, surpassing Hollywood. At that time the word "Bollywood" was coined.

Salman Khan

The name, Bollywood is derived from "Bombay" and "Hollywood". Many including Amitabh Bachchan think that the name of Bollywood is not correct. Actor Salman Khan has recently (Feb 2011) suggested that Mumbai's Hindi film industry be called HiFi (for Hindi film industry), instead of "Bollywood".

Films in other language like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Bengali are also made in India.

Raja Harishchandra was the first feature film made in india in 1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke which was a first silent film. Ardeshir Irani produced its first Indian sound film in 1931, named Alam Ara. Today Bollywood makes the largest number of films in the world. Bollywood films are watched not only by Indians, but are also popular in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Middle East, Africa and other parts of the world.

Bollywood has influenced the Western films world. The film "Moulin Rouge" made by Baz Luhrmann in 2001 was inspired by Bollywood which contined a play based on the ancient Sanskrit drama The Little Clay Cart and a Bollywood-style dance sequence inspired with a song from the film China Gate.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) made by Danny Boyle won four Golden Globes and eight Academy Awards, was inspired by Bollywood films. A. R. Rahman, the Oscar winner Indian film composer, wrote the music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams. The Bollywood movie Lagaan (2001) by Aamir Khan was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, while Devdas (2002) and Rang De Basanti (2006) were nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film. No wonder, even non Hindi speaking people from overseas like the Bollywood movies, dances and songs.

Bollywood plays a major role in fashion in India. The young boyes and gilrs copy the clothes of their favorite Bollywood stars.
