In 1920s and 30s, actresses were not averse to kissing on screen. Released in 1921, “Bilat Ferat” was the first love story that was interspersed with loads of intimate scenes and kisses. However in 1954, some women in Delhi presented a petition in 1954 to then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru agains such scenes in Indian films Since then stricter censorship laws were enforced. Since that time, kiss scenes were prohibited from Bollywood and other Indian films. Only the kiss on the cheeks were allowed, but never on lips (a French kiss). It is only in the last few decades, lip kissing has been allowed in movies in India. Kissing in public places is still prohibited. The old movies would show kiss only on the cheeks or forehead. The stars would come close to show the pose of lips kissing, but the actual kiss was never shown, instead pecking pigeons or fondling flowers used to be shown.
